You can shoot your maternity pictures on location in a natural setting or an urban one or in your home. If you want, you can even do a little of both and do some shots outdoors and some in a faux-studio set up in your house though, of course, you need to allow more time for this.
You want to book your session for the period of your pregnancy when your belly is past your breasts and you are obviously expecting. For most people that is at 7 – 8 months. For multiples it is sooner; if you are expecting multiples we’ll want to schedule your primary session at about 6 months though we can schedule a special, complimentary, mini-session at 8 months to record how very big you will get. (I actually could not drive by the end of my twin pregnancy because by the time I had the seat back far enough to fit behind the wheel of my car I couldn’t reach the pedals.)
Some clothing options you may wish to consider include: jeans and a button down men’s shirt; a black top that can be pulled up to expose your belly with a black skirt or pants; a wrap or sweater that flows around your form and any favorite maternity outfits. If you can fit into your pre-maternity jeans (unbuttoned) bring those because the elastic band on maternity pants is not the most attractive bit of fashion ever. Stay away from sweats and yoga pants; they are tremendously comfortable and look horrible in pictures. Your partner should be in jeans and a simple black or white shirt. Children should be in simple outfits such as jeans and solid t-shirts, overalls or plain sun-dresses. If we are shooting outdoors, especially an urban shoot, try to wear cute shoes. I know, it’s hard. If we are shooting indoors at your home don’t worry about shoes.
If we shoot at your home I will set up a backdrop near the best natural lighting source. Don’t be surprised if I move furniture around – at least you’ll know where I’m going to head when we do your newborn shoot a few months later! If we shoot outdoors we’ll walk from one location to another (within a small area – I won’t make you walk from Hartford to Simsbury) to get a greater variety of shots. I particularly like shooting on fire escapes and in alleys both of which result in lovely, slightly edgy urban style images.
Be sure to style your hair; longer hair looks lovely down and loose. We will be shooting close ups of your hands on your belly so treat yourself to a manicure before your session.
It takes 5-10 business days for me to get your images ready to be viewed in their online slideshow though I usually am able to get at least one image up on the blog so you can get a quick look (and forward the link to family and friends, of course.) If you are on Facebook I can tag your pictures there so you can share them with friends that way. You are welcome to use the online images for anything you like as long as you leave the watermark on them; they are low resolution for quick loading on the web and won’t print nicely but they are great to forward via email to family or post in online communities.
Your slideshow will be up for two weeks; you can expect at least 20 proofs. There is a 15% discount for the first three days. If you do not order within that time there is a $25 fee to rehost it.
