I recently got a Holga, which is a toy camera notorious for, err, low fidelity output. Working with it is rather like a theatrical trust exercise since you really have no control over settings at all AND the things tend to leak light like sieves. This is considered a feature. No, really. Sure, when you work with film generally the main idea is to keep it from getting an sort of light exposure other than the very controlled light through the lens. But with this $25 beauty the fact that light can, and probably will, leak in is NOT a bug or design flaw, oh no. It is a feature. What, you don’t believe me? I’m not kidding.
And, yes, I said $25. Multiply that by a factor of about 100 and you’d get the cost of what you see me carrying on a shoot, assuming I never actually change my lens. Of course, you have to add the film to that and I confess cheated on this roll and sent it out to a lab because I actually find developing pretty boring; what you see is a actually negative scan with some contrast added which I would do printing rather than a scan of a print. But for a toy to enjoy on days off you can’t beat the price!
A trifle of personal work to amuse before I start the all the Fresh Faces newborn portrait sessions of February and March.
